Annuale degli studenti is a competition organized “by the students, for the students”.

The project came out of the student organization “AIM – Architettura in Mobilitazione” to create a web of architectural students, connecting their Experiences and their own Realities. The aim is to involve them in a movement of comparison and mutual exchange in an “autonomous space”, free from any institutional approach.

The idea to organize the first edition came out of the necessity to have a comparison between the work of the students of architecture. The scope is to define the nascent styles, analyze the trends and see the needs of the new generations of architects who will face the labor market in a few years.

Even in cities like Rome, where there are two architecture schools, there had never been a comparison. Neither of the students know what was happening in each other’s works. Our project was born from this starting point, an idea that gave birth to an exhibition – the first point of contact in a world so divided.

44 participants took part at the first edition, coming not only from Sapienza University but also from Roma 3 University, whose projects were not big in numbers, but in impact in the exhibition. Students from the same Universities were called to judge some tables, giving two preferences, and choosing among the presented projects.

During the exhibition, all the tables were presented, without any difference between winner and loser. We decided to accent the selected projects exposed inside “Donato”, an artistic installation designed by the students during a workshop, inside the self-managed room “Petruccioli” in Valle Giulia Building, a place which may be considered a creative forge and a big condenser of student’s creativity.

Strong and incredulous for what we have done during the past year, we decided to open our idea to the whole national area, widening our horizons and also involving other university collectives: by the students for the students. In this way we started out a collaboration with Collective HpO from Ferrara and Arkimastria from Sassari.

From this year, even stronger and prouder of the students’ response, we decided to bring the annual experience out of the faculty. This is happening thanks to new collaborations created by the curiosity of what could paradoxically be called a “revolutionary” project, in a static and introverted reality like the Roman one, which represents a first break in the diaphragm that hides the work of the students within the four university walls.

Indeed, the “Annuale degli studenti” is a virtual space where you can upload a project realized during your studies, put yourself out there and add value to your work without any academical evaluation. We want to nurture a new type of comparison that will not place the students as antagonists, but as collaborators in their own growth.
