Lobotomy – a surgical operation of the frontal lobes of the brain. The severed part is responsible for the individual’s personality (judgement ability). The operation causes the person to lose themselves and their will to live.

Project: Renovation of a semi-ground floor apartment in Granada, Spain; south-oriented, with a view of the Alhambra, single-resident space.

Proposed solution: To account for the poor spatial organization and the lack of identity of place, it is re-implanted through the principle of an inverse lobotomy. The apartment is stripped of the entire existing spatial structure and re-organized into three areas: public, semi-public and private. Each area is defined by a specific functional element.

A brick-and-timber screen wall with fixed elements defines the public area.

A vaulted ceiling of glass blocks defines the semi-public area.

A mirror, allowing light reflection and visual expansion of space, defines the private area.
